She's Not Going to Fall for That!

One of the many great things about homeschooling is the opportunity to teach your kids the subjects you feel are important.  ClaireAnna and I just finished this text on argument.  She is now very capable of identifying twenty-eight different fallacies and understanding how they invalidate an argument.  She's learned how to recognize these fallacies in our culture, discussions and media and she's not going to fall for them! This is a great study of informal logic that sets the stage for learning more advanced deductive reasoning skills. We enjoyed it and learned a lot! 

Turtle Dissection

ClaireAnna is studying Physical Science this year, not biology. But she has been begging to dissect a turtle for almost a year now, so here we go!  I purchased a turtle prepared for dissection and a guide manual at Home Science Tools.  

The candle was a necessity. 

2013 Spring Co-op

ClaireAnna is taking an excellent co-op class called Eye Appeal!  She is learning all about the science of the eye.  They have had a field trip to an optomatrist and today, they got to disect an actual cow's eye.  ClaireAnna is loving it.

This semester, I'm teaching my first co-op class.  The kids are making the SHARK LAPBOOK in this post that ClaireAnna made a couple of years ago.  I think they are having fun learning about sharks although some of the boys seem to already know the material! I've got some big shark fans in this class of 19.

 This gorgeous group of homeschoolers from REACH (Russellville Education Association of Christian Homeschoolers) attended Oklahoma! today at the Alma Performing Arts Center! We had a wonderful time and the performance was excellent. 

    After the play, some of us ate at Braums and then did some Christmas shopping.

 

LAPBOOK: Chemistry

 We took over a year to make this lapbook.  The unit study and printables can be found HERE.  We went through the book Christian Kids Explore Chemistry and as we came to appropriate sections, would complete the section and mini book from the unit study.  We also did some extra experiments, took photos and did a mini book on them.  Some of our mini books we made up ourselves but most are from the free one online.  Once we were done with our chemistry study, we had an envelope full of mini books to put into the lapbook.  We also printed off several photos, charts and graphs to include.  This is the biggest and most complete lapbook we've ever done. It was lots of fun and is now a great tool for review for ClaireAnna.  Click on the photos to enlarge.

On the right is a time line of their lives and a map showing country of origin. 

We learned about molecules, atoms and nano particles.

We learned what every bit of information on the periodic table stands for. 

We learned all about the different sections of the periodic table.

REACH Girls Basketball

ClaireAnna Harmon, Kerstin and Apsen Shirley, Nicolette Schroeder and Emily and Erica Hampton all got together to play some basketball at City Park.  Zino Schroeder filled in and all had a great time!  We’re hoping to make this a regular thing!  Next time, Claire will try not to jam her finger and turn it black and blue.

BIOLOGY

In August of 2009, ClaireAnna and I started this book. It’s a full year course on Biology from a Christian perspective for grades 3-6. You adjust the work for the grade you are teaching.

We worked through the the text and filled this binder with color pages, experiments, quizzes, diagrams, drawings and lots of other things. It’s a fat binder and it’s full!

This past summer, ClaireAnna participated in a week long science camp on the human body, put on by our local university. It fit right in with our biology study. This fall, we took some extra time to review the Human Body and study it more in depth with this book.

The last unit in the biology text was on Water Creatures and since ClaireAnna LOVES Sharks, we took some extra time to study them more in depth and make this lapbook.

ClaireAnna wants you to know that sharks don’t eat people on purpose. They don’t even like the taste. Sharks can’t help it if you look like a seal!

So, we’ve finished Biology! It’s been so much fun! For the remainder of this school year, we’ll study Chemistry with this book! ClaireAnna can’t wait to do all the experiments and learn about matter, molecules, atoms, elements, reactions and all the rest! She LOVES science!
